The WordPress content audit skill is a free Claude skill that goes through every published post and page on your site and reports what is stale, orphaned or overlapping. It ranks the results so you know where to start, and leaves every decision to update, merge or retire a page to you. It never edits anything.
What does the WordPress content audit skill check?
It runs three checks over the full inventory of published posts and pages:
- Stale: content older than a threshold you confirm. The default is 18 months, but the skill asks first, because content pace differs a lot per site.
- Orphaned: posts and pages that no other post or page links to. Orphaned content is hard to find, for visitors and for search engines.
- Overlapping: two or more pieces that cover near-identical ground, judged on titles and headings. These are merge candidates.
Pieces that trip all three flags go to the top of the list, because they are the clearest candidates for retiring. Pieces with one flag come after.
What does the WordPress content audit skill report look like?
One list or table per flag type, each with its evidence: the date, the number of inbound internal links, or the other posts a page overlaps with. A bare title with a checkmark is not enough, so the skill always shows why something is flagged. The example in the WordPress content audit skill reports four stale posts, three orphaned pages and one overlap cluster, and ends with a top priority: an old setup guide that is stale, orphaned and overlaps with a newer doc.
Which tools does the WordPress content audit skill use?
Read tools from the WordPress add-on of MCP Self-hosted:
wordpress_list_postsandwordpress_list_pagespull the inventory, page by page, up to 100 items per call. The skill tells Claude to page through everything, because a partial audit is a misleading one.wordpress_get_postandwordpress_get_pagereturn title, date, link, categories, tags and the full HTML content.
The orphan check scans the body of every post and page for links to the others. That is why the full content is fetched.
What do you need to run it?
You need MCP Self-hosted and the WordPress MCP add-on. The skill download is free and needs no license; the add-on gives Claude access to your site. MCP Self-hosted costs € 217,80 excl. VAT: € 180,00/yr with 3 seats, and the WordPress add-on is € 108,90 excl. VAT: € 90,00 per year.
The add-on connects with a WordPress application password. Read-only is enough and is the default; the audit never needs Can make changes. With several sites in WORDPRESS_CONNECTIONS, Claude asks or picks the site by id. The WordPress MCP setup guide walks through the site URL, username and application password.
How do you install the WordPress content audit skill?
- Download it from this page. Checkout is free, and the file appears under Skills in My Account.
- Unzip the folder:
SKILL.mdwith the procedure andREADME.mdwith install notes, no scripts. - In Claude Code, copy it to
~/.claude/skills/, or to.claude/skills/in one project. - In Claude Desktop, add it through Claude’s own skills settings.
~/.claude/skills/wordpress-content-audit-skill/SKILL.md
Then ask: “Audit our WordPress content”, “What’s stale or outdated on the site?” or “Find posts that overlap or duplicate each other.”
What are the limits of the WordPress content audit skill?
The post data from the WordPress add-on carries the publish date, not the last-modified date. The age check runs on that date, so a post you updated last week still shows its original date. Check the edit date in wp-admin before you retire anything.
The orphan check looks at links inside post and page content. Links from menus and widgets are not part of that scan, so a page linked only from the main menu shows up as orphaned. On a large site the full body scan takes many calls; the skill says so up front and offers to scope the audit by category or to the last N posts instead of quietly cutting the result short.
Overlap is not flagged on a thin keyword match when the angle of two posts is clearly different. A false positive wastes review time just like a missed duplicate.
Does the skill change my site?
No. The WordPress content audit skill never calls an update tool, never deletes and never unpublishes, and it does not assume Can make changes exists. It reports; you act.
The WordPress content audit skill is free to download. Get it here, browse the Claude skills catalog for the other skills, or read the free Claude skills overview to see how skills and add-ons work together.
