The WooCommerce MCP server lets Claude answer questions about your shop by calling your store's REST API: which orders are still on hold, what a specific customer bought, how many units of a product are left. You stop switching to wp-admin for every lookup. Claude fetches the data and works with it in the same conversation.
The WooCommerce MCP server runs on mcp-core, the self-hosted MCP server, which you run in Docker on your own server. Claude Desktop and Claude Code connect to mcp-core, and mcp-core talks to WooCommerce with REST API keys that you generate and keep in your own .env.
What does the WooCommerce MCP server expose to Claude?
In read-only mode Claude gets five tools: list orders, get one order, list products, get one product, and list customers. Order details include the customer, status, totals and line items. That covers most day-to-day questions from a shop owner or a support team.
Some prompts that work well:
- "Show all orders with status on-hold from the last week."
- "Get order 1042 and tell me what was ordered and for how much."
- "Which products are out of stock?"
- "Find the customer with this email and list their orders."
Can Claude change orders in WooCommerce?
Only if you allow it. On a seat added with WooCommerce set to read-write, three write tools are added: update an order's status, add an order note, and update stock. In read-only mode those tools are not registered at all, so Claude never sees them.
A few details matter here. An order note is internal by default; Claude has to mark it as a customer note explicitly before the customer sees it. A stock update only takes effect on products with "Manage stock" enabled. The WooCommerce MCP server does not switch that setting on for you, because silently changing inventory tracking is not something an AI tool should do.
How do you connect the WooCommerce MCP server to your store?
You connect it with a WooCommerce REST API key pair. Create one in your store under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → REST API. Give the key read permission for a read-only setup, or read/write if you plan to enable write mode. Then add the values to your mcp-core .env:
WOOCOMMERCE_STORE_URL=https://shop.example.com
WOOCOMMERCE_CONSUMER_KEY=ck_xxxxxxxx
WOOCOMMERCE_CONSUMER_SECRET=cs_xxxxxxxx
Run ./mcp-update.sh and the WooCommerce tools load as soon as the license includes the add-on. Bought it after your first install? Run docker exec mcp-core npm run refresh-license or wait for the next license check. The WooCommerce setup documentation covers each step, including testing the keys.
Does it work with more than one WooCommerce store?
Yes. Agencies and merchants with several shops set WOOCOMMERCE_CONNECTIONS, a JSON array with an id, URL and key pair per store. Every tool then gets a required store parameter, and Claude picks the store by its id. There is no default store once you configure more than one, so a question about the outlet shop never lands on the main shop by accident.
Once WOOCOMMERCE_CONNECTIONS is set, it replaces the single-store variables. One license, one mcp-core container and one WooCommerce MCP server for as many stores as you configure. For agencies that manage client shops, MCP for agencies explains how to organise this.
Which add-on fits next to WooCommerce?
Most WooCommerce shops also run a WordPress site with content, so the WordPress MCP server is the obvious companion: orders from WooCommerce, posts and pages from WordPress, in one Claude conversation. For reporting across your whole order table, the Database add-on lets Claude run SQL queries with a read-only database user.
